Batela South Africa was born out of a love for shopping and an appreciation for fashion.
Founded and run by an entrepreneur, an attorney, and an accountant.

Michelle and Casey came across the first Batela jacket in a boutique in Madrid in 2019. It was a Women’s C3044 – a yellow Batela waterproof jacket with a striped cotton lining.

Casey liked the look and quality of the jacket, and Michelle realised she would be able to purchase one for herself and matching jackets for her grandchildren, as Batela manufactured children’s jackets too.

The pair soon realised that they had stumbled upon the perfect coastal jacket – good for breezy walks on the beach, enjoying sundowners on the river or going out to dinner.

While continuing their holiday, and flying to Barcelona, Michelle and Casey stumbled upon a Batela store near La Boqueria market. 14 more jackets were purchased for family members.

When back home, Michelle, Casey, and Michelle’s daughter, Jess, contacted Batela’s Head Office in Spain and became its newest reseller. The three placed their initial order, and 10 days later took delivery of pallets of jackets at their new Batela warehouse.

The first five Batela stockists were The Old House Shop in Plett, Mediterraneo Emporium in Stellenbosch, Dot Milton Beauty in Somerset West, and That’s It! Boutique in Illovo, Johannesburg. Within a 12 month period, Batela jackets were being sold in 30 stores nationwide.

The Batela jackets are worn and loved by some of South Africa’s greats: world-renowned artist Lionel Smit; Dr Bongi Hill, a paediatrician, mother and advocate for equality; Olwethu Leshabane, digital creator, tv host and publisher; author, business owner, athlete and motivational speaker, Letshego Zulu; entrepreneur, Loretta Hove; Cape journalist and photographer, Armand Hough; and talented Amber Wright, fighting breast cancer in the strongest and most inspiring way.

The team is grateful for the opportunity to bring the Batela waterproof leisure garments to South Africa, and for the overwhelming support it has received so far. Batela SA looks forward to continuing to change the way one approaches coastal weather and travel, and broadcast the message that inclement weather no longer needs to compromise style.
