BATELA SA OFFSETS CARBON EMISSIONS, PROMOTES SUSTAINABILITY

Focusing on offsetting carbon emissions, promoting biodiversity, quality and reducing waste

REDUCING & OFFSETTING CARBON EMISSIONS

There is no legal obligation on Batela SA to reduce our carbon emissions. However, we believe that we have an ethical and moral obligation to the planet and our customers to do so.

We have partnered with Food & Trees for Africa - a leading section 21 Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that addresses food security, environmental sustainability, carbon emissions, and greening. In its 34 years of operation, the NPO has established itself as one of the best social development organisations in Africa.

Food & Trees for Africa assists us with calculating our carbon emissions from the import of our Batela products from Spain, and advises what is required to offset them. We implement the NPO’s recommendations by contributing to its various projects, which culminates in the planting and maintenance of indigenous and fruit-bearing trees across various parts of South Africa.

Notable projects that we contribute to, include the NPO’s:

  • Food Forests Initiative

which involves planting a combination of indigenous and fruit bearing trees in vulnerable, pre-vetted sites in South Africa: https://trees.org.za/trees-carbon/food-forests/ Through this initiative, we have successfully planted trees at schools and a family welfare facility in Tembisa, Mirand and Kaalfontein in Gauteng.
  • Transkei Scarp Forest

project underway in the Eastern Cape: https://www.trees.africa/forests. This involves the planting of indigenous trees as part of a massive reforestation effort by the NPO, with the support and involvement of the local communities.
  • Amathole Mistbelt Forest

reforestation project, in the Eastern Cape, is also underway with similar objectives to the Transkei Scarp Forest. More information on the reforestation efforts of both the Amathole Mistbelt Forest and Transkei Scarp Forest can be found here: https://www.trees.africa/forests

REDUCING & OFFSETTING CARBON EMISSIONS

Customers can breathe easy knowing that the emissions from the import of their Batela jackets from Spain have been offset by Batela SA, at no additional cost to the customer.

PRESERVING BIODIVERSITY IN NATURE AREAS

While offsetting emissions is important to us, preserving biodiversity in nature areas is also a key interest of the Batela SA team. It is why we are particularly excited about our involvement in the Transkei Scarp Forest and Amathole Mistbelt Forest projects.

In addition, Batela SA is fortunate to be able to contribute to NPO F.O.S.T.E.R. in the Cape St Francis area of the Eastern Cape, which does great work in maintaining and preserving nature areas under its care and making them accessible to all who choose to enjoy them.

QUALITY PRODUCT

A Batela jacket is iconic and designed to transcend seasons and trends.

In the South African climate, it can be worn throughout the year and for various functions ranging from travel, city lunches, safari escapes, and beach walks, to weekends in the winelands.

If care and washing instructions are followed, your Batela jacket can last for years. Each jacket is an investment piece that is and will remain a wardrobe staple.

Our Batela jackets are made from vegan-friendly materials. The materials used to make up the jackets have been tested by globally standardized, independent testing and certification system STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® and are certified to carry the label.

Reducing Waste

Over time, we have revised and reduced our packaging. As it stands, our online purchases are sent out in a biodegradable PVC resealable bag.

The resealable bag is better than our initial packaging as it is:

The resealable bag is better than our first packaging as it is:

Lightweight
This contributes to a lighter load for the courier company.
Extremely compact
It takes up less space in a delivery vehicle than our previous packing.
Weather-resistant
Protecting your beautiful jacket, and valuables afterwards when re-using the resealable bag.
Re-usable
Think bag for keeping valuables dry on the beach or on a boat, protecting clothes during overseas travel, carrying charging cables, or even storing kids’ toys.
Biodegradable & recyclable
However, we recommend re-using rather than discarding, where possible.

Opting for Environmentally-Conscious Logistics

In addition, we have reduced our inserts and are now down to a single card. The card contains a QR code where our washing & care instructions are displayed - previously, washing instructions was a separate insert.

As a small South African business, we are only a few years into the sustainability scene, but are committed to doing our best to support better practises, as far as reasonably possible. We do not hold ourselves out to be perfect, but trust that our efforts make a difference, and encourage change by other businesses, no matter how small.
